About our dog leads

Our dog lead range covers everything from a quick five-minute stroll round the block to a long muddy ramble with a strong-pulling Labrador. Every lead is finished with a padded neoprene handle to take the sting out of a sudden lunge, and a heavy-duty swivel clip that turns with your dog instead of corkscrewing the lead by the end of the walk. We make two core lead types - fabric and rope - built to the same quality standard but designed for different walks and different dogs, so you can pick the lead that actually suits how your dog walks rather than settling for whatever the high street stocks. Every fabric lead is printed in patterns that match our harness, collar and walking bag range.

Our dog lead range

Two core lead styles cover almost every owner. Fabric dog leads are our signature - patterned, pastel and solid-colour leads, 5ft (150cm) long and 2cm wide, with a soft padded neoprene handle and a matching harness and collar in the same print. They're the everyday choice for calm walkers and small to medium breeds. Rope dog leads are heavier and more rugged: waterproof double-braided nylon with whipped ends and gold hardware, in 5ft and 6ft lengths at 1.5cm rope width, with two D-rings that slide along the lead. They absorb sudden lunges better than woven fabric, which makes them the right pick for strong pullers, larger breeds and rougher walks - and the reason most owners doing loose-lead work reach for rope. Our Luxe leads share the fabric build with an embroidered floral finish. Every lead pairs with our harness and collar ranges so you can buy a matching bundle and save 25%. How to choose the right dog lead

Start with how your dog walks, not with the breed. Calm walkers and small to medium breeds do best on a fabric lead - it's lightweight, comfortable in the hand, and matches the rest of the walking set. Strong pullers and larger breeds need a rope lead, which absorbs sudden lunges much better and lasts longer through years of pulling. Puppies and owners doing loose-lead work are usually best on a 6ft rope lead: the extra length gives your dog room to move without you having to drop the lead, and the two sliding D-rings let you shorten it near roads. Whatever style you pick, pair it with the right harness - a pulling dog needs a no-pull harness or a front-clip harness so the harness manages the pull, not the lead. Length matters too: our fabric leads are a fixed 5ft (150cm), which is the standard everyday walking length, while the 6ft rope lead gives you a little more room for park work. Finally, look at coordination - our fabric leads are cut from the same fabric runs as the harness and collar, so if you already own a PupClub harness, the matching fabric lead will line up exactly.

Types of dog lead in our range

  • Fabric dog leads - soft, lightweight, 5ft (150cm) x 2cm, patterned to match the harness and collar range; ideal for calm walkers.
  • Rope dog leads - waterproof double-braided nylon with whipped ends, 1.5cm width, better shock absorption for strong pullers and larger breeds.
  • 5ft leads - the standard everyday length, available in both fabric and rope.
  • 6ft rope leads - a little more room for park walks, recall practice and loose-lead training.
  • Luxe leads - the fabric build with an embroidered floral pattern, for something a bit smarter.
  • Padded-handle leads - the soft neoprene grip our whole range is built on, sized for adult and smaller hands alike.
  • Leads with a poo-bag D-ring - every fabric lead has a second D-ring at the base of the handle for a poop pocket or poo bag holder.
  • Matching harness, collar & lead sets - one print across the full set, with 25% off the bundle price.
  • Puppy-friendly leads - lightweight fabric leads sized to pair with our XS and S harnesses for first-time walking.

Fabric leads vs rope leads

The two categories in our lead range are fabric and rope, and the choice mostly comes down to your dog's walking style. Fabric leads are softer, lighter and printed in patterns to match the rest of the walking set - the best fit if your dog walks calmly and you care about a coordinated look. Rope leads are heavier and more rugged: the waterproof double-braided nylon absorbs sudden lunges much better than woven fabric and shrugs off wet, muddy walks, and the whipped ends stop the rope fraying. Most owners we talk to start with a fabric lead because it matches the harness and collar, then add a rope lead for longer muddy walks or once the dog grows into a stronger puller. If you walk in wet, rugged terrain or have a powerful breed, start with rope.

Dog leads by dog size

Toy and very small breeds - Chihuahuas, Yorkshire Terriers, Mini Dachshunds and Pomeranians do best on a lightweight fabric lead. The fabric construction is gentle enough that a sudden tug from your end won't startle a tiny dog, and the padded handle keeps the lead comfortable to hold without weighing the dog down.

Small breeds - Cavapoos, Bichons, Shih Tzus and small Cockapoos suit our standard fabric leads. These dogs typically don't pull hard, so fabric is plenty strong, and the matching pattern across harness, collar and lead is one of the most popular looks at this size. Our small dog harness guide covers pairing the right harness.

Medium breeds - Cocker Spaniels, standard Cockapoos, Border Collies, Beagles and similar-sized breeds suit either a fabric lead (for calm walkers) or a rope lead (for the busier ones). The padded neoprene handle really earns its keep on a 45-minute walk with a busy spaniel.

Large breeds - Labradors, Golden Retrievers, Springer Spaniels and larger Poodles can walk on a fabric lead if they're calm, but most do better on a rope lead for the extra shock absorption when they spot a squirrel. Pair with a no-pull harness for the most comfortable walks.

Strong pullers and very large breeds - if your dog regularly lunges or pulls hard, go straight to a rope lead and pair it with a no-pull or dual-D-ring harness. The rope handles sudden force better than woven fabric, and the harness keeps your dog (and your hand) more comfortable than a collar attachment. Long-backed breeds like Dachshunds especially benefit from the harness taking the load.

Matching bundles and accessories

Every fabric lead in this range has a matching harness, collar, walking bag and poop pocket cut from the same fabric run. The easiest way to buy is the matching bundle - the Rugged Rover harness, a fabric collar, a 5ft fabric lead and a poo bag holder in one print - which saves 25% compared with buying the pieces individually. Most owners start with the harness for the walk, then add the matching collar for ID and the lead so the full set coordinates. If you already own a harness in one of our prints, you can add the matching lead standalone - the print runs are kept consistent across the range so your lead will line up exactly. Browse matching leads & collars to see the pairs.

Shop dog leads by type

If you already know what you're after, go straight to the right sub-collection. Fabric leads is the biggest group - every patterned, pastel and solid-colour 5ft lead that matches a harness and collar. Rope leads holds the waterproof 5ft and 6ft nylon leads with gold hardware, for pullers and wet walks. Luxe is the embroidered floral finish on the same fabric build. Best-selling leads is the shortcut if you'd rather see what other owners buy most, and leads & collars shows the two together if you're buying a pair.

Orders over £40 ship free, everything dispatches same-day before 1pm, and 30-day hassle-free returns cover you if the fit isn't right. The team that answers your emails is the same team that picks the range - if you're not sure whether fabric or rope is right for your dog, just ask.

Dog lead size guide

Lead "size" is about length and width, not a fitted measurement - so there's nothing to measure on your dog. Our fabric leads are a fixed 5ft (150cm), the standard everyday walking length. Rope leads come in 5ft and 6ft. Pick by walking style first, then by pattern.

Lead style Length Width Best for
Fabric lead (incl. Luxe) 150cm (5ft) 2cm Calm walkers, small-medium breeds, everyday walks
Rope lead - 5ft 150cm (5ft) 1.5cm Strong pullers, medium-large breeds, wet and muddy walks
Rope lead - 6ft 183cm (6ft) 1.5cm Extra room for park walks, recall practice and loose-lead work
5ft blue rope dog lead with gold hardware and whipped ends - PupClub Couture

Dog Leads FAQs

What's the difference between fabric and rope dog leads?
Fabric leads are soft, lightweight and patterned to match the harness range - best for calm walkers and everyday walks. Rope leads are waterproof double-braided nylon, heavier and more rugged - best for strong pullers, larger breeds and wet, muddy walks.
Do you sell training leads or long lines?
We don't make a separate training lead or a 3-5m long line. For loose-lead work and recall practice most owners here use our 6ft rope lead: the extra length gives your dog room to move, and the two D-rings slide along the lead so you can shorten it near roads.
How long should a dog lead be?
Around 5ft (150cm) is the standard everyday length - long enough for comfortable side-by-side walking, short enough to keep your dog close in traffic. That's the length of every fabric lead we make. Our rope leads come in 5ft and 6ft if you want a little more room.
Should I clip the lead to my dog's collar or harness?
Clip the lead to a harness, not a collar. Walking on a collar puts the full force of any pull on your dog's neck and can stress the trachea, especially in puppies, small breeds and brachycephalic breeds like French Bulldogs and Pugs. A harness spreads the force across the chest and is far safer.
What kind of clip do PupClub leads use?
Our fabric leads use a heavy-duty swivel clip. The swivel stops the lead twisting and tangling as your dog moves, and it's easy to operate one-handed when you're juggling poo bags and treats. Rope leads use gold hardware with two D-rings that adjust along the lead.
Can I attach poo bags to the lead?
Yes. Every fabric lead has a second D-ring at the base of the handle, designed to take our Poop Pocket or a poo bag holder, so the bags hang off the lead instead of your wrist or your pocket.
Will the fabric lead match my PupClub harness and collar?
Yes - every fabric lead is cut from the same fabric run as the matching harness, collar, walking bag and poop pocket in the same print. Buy the matching bundle and save 25% on the full set.
How do I wash a PupClub dog lead?
Hand wash at 30C and air-dry flat - don't tumble dry, as the heat can damage the clip hardware over time. Our rope leads are waterproof double-braided nylon, so a muddy walk usually rinses straight off.
What lead should I buy for a puppy?
A lightweight 5ft fabric lead paired with a well-fitted XS or S harness. The lightweight fabric is gentle on a puppy's first walks and the padded handle is comfortable through the stop-start pace of early training. Our puppy harness guide covers fit in detail, and we sell purpose-made puppy harness, lead & collar sets.
