How the step-in puppy harness compares

Choose the step-in puppy harness for the easiest possible first-harness experience, and move to our adjustable range once your pup is bigger and stronger. The step-in shape is the gentlest introduction for tiny, nervous puppies who dislike anything going over their head.

The step-in puppy harness fastens low on the body and offers two chest sizes (XS and Small), which suits toy and small breeds and very young pups perfectly. As your puppy grows, or if you have a larger breed, our adjustable harnesses give you far more room to fine-tune the neck and chest and will last into adulthood. Many owners start with the puppy set and simply size up later.

Choosing by your puppy's size

Pick your size by measuring the widest part of your puppy's chest, just behind the front legs, and matching it to our two puppy harness sizes below. Weight and age vary hugely between breeds, so the chest measurement is always the reliable guide.

Toy and very small breeds — Chihuahuas, Yorkies, Miniature Dachshunds and similar tiny pups usually start in our XS (35–40cm chest). These little ones benefit most from the lightweight step-in shape.

Growing and medium breeds — if your puppy is already approaching a 45cm chest or is a fast-growing breed, start in the adjustable harness range instead, which extends well beyond the puppy sizes and grows with them.

Between sizes or not sure? — always size up rather than down and use the Velcro and buckle to snug the fit. A correctly fitted harness lets you slide two fingers under any strap without it being loose enough to slip.
